How to commission a work of art

Our team at Inter-Art can help you commission a work of art for private or commercial collection. Owning a piece of art is a pleasurable and enjoyable experience. You may have previously purchased a piece or can’t find exactly what you are looking for. If so, why not commission a work from one of the Inter-Art artists. Commissioning an artist to produce a work of art can be highly rewarding, both for the client and the artist. The commissioned piece is unique and personal and it is created specifically for you and your requirements.

What we do

Each commission will vary slightly in the actual process, however to assist you we have outlined some basic guidelines. An Inter-Art consultant will guide you through the entire process from start to delivery.

Developing your brief

The brief for the commission is a document that records your thoughts and ideas on paper and serves as a point of reference, both for the client and the artist to outline precisely what is to be achieved in the piece, and further serves as the contract for the agreement. The brief should include:

  • Who or what is the work for; the space, the function of the piece
  • Dimensions
  • Medium - materials
  • Any constraints or special requirements
  • The type of artwork, style, subject
  • Budget; and any details regarding installation & delivery

Do your research

Search through the Inter-Art site to see what styles and pieces you like. You can also see examples of previously commissioned works.

You can save the artist that interests you in the ‘My Art’ list.

Contact Inter-Art

Inter-Art is here to help. Contact us with your list of artists or pieces that interest you. Either we can help you identify a new artist via our ‘Art consultancy’ department or we can advise on an existing Inter-Art artist who could suit your tastes and requirements.

We then will make contact with the artist on your behalf, discussing the possibility of a commission and the initial details of the possible piece.

When agreed in principle we can assist in compiling the ‘Artists’ Brief’

Making an Agreement

If you are prepared to go-ahead with the suggested artist a final brief will be created which outlines the materials, subject, costs and timescale. We will create a contract between the client and the artist. For large scale commission it is advisable to have a solicitor draw up a more extensive contract.

The work process

  • The artist will produce any sketches and samples required.
  • Fee – normal practice is to pay 50% upon agreeing the commission, 25% halfway through and the final payment on completion and delivery of the artwork
  • Delivery & Transit insurance will be arranged by Inter-Art which will be invoiced separately.
  • Installation can be arranged if required. Costs are settled direct with the installer.
  • Ownership & moral rights – under copyright laws the artist possesses first ownership of a work of art they themselves have created. If you require additional user rights (i.e. commercial reproduction, corporate promotional material) an additional contract is required.
