Julie Clark

Concept

My work is inspired by a contemporary play with Romanticism. I like to challenge preconceived notions associated with landscape which results in a constant interplay between the contemporary and traditional. Along with contemporary artists, I draw my inspiration from JMW Turner and the philosophy of Edmund Burke.

The Romantics used atmosphere to evoke an emotional response from the viewer; suggesting altered states of removal from everyday experience which was often associated with spiritual transcendence. Through an interplay of manipulation of the landscape using contemporary media i.e. camera lense and simulated weather effects viewed through the train window, I detach myself from the landscape; as opposed to being ‘in’ or ‘at one’ with it in the traditional Romantic sense. None of my work is digitally manipulated.

In the Romantic tradition these images still offer a sense of the beyond and appreciation of the restorative and uplifting powers of nature but they are also deceptive in their superficiality. This is more indicative of our more alienated postmodern condition, in connection with our detached relationship to nature.
