Kate Brinkworth

Concept

My current work is strongly influenced by a curiosity in films, the use of camera angles and the role of narrative. I use the language of film to create an image, the ‘point-of-view’ technique and varying degrees of focus used to draw the viewers attention to a certain area or object of particular importance to the plot, are central to my compositions.

I was initially influenced by Hitchcock films or those with a high level of suspense and intrigue. I started to work from still life’s, set up using small suggestive objects which placed together and using differing degrees of focus have undertones from which the viewer may abstract their own narrative.

Some paintings such as those of dice and cards loosely suggest settings and games, but others have a strong central narrative running through a series of images. ‘The Poker Game’, a series of 53 playing cards, has a strong narrative using objects to show not only a sequence of events, but to give a sense of characters and place. It is designed to act as a pack of cards, randomly dealt, the events depicted can be interpreted in numerous ways.

The paintings are not intended to imitate a photograph, but using the ideas of film to create an intriguing image. The different areas within the painting are intended to be equally appealing, the focal point to draw the viewers attention to a specific point and the blurred areas to intrigue the viewer.
