Mary Gibbons

Concept
I am principally inspired by colour. I am drawn to saturated colour, whether an object, a scene, landscape, photograph or painting. Texture and layers of decay are also of interest. Japanese art has had a strong influence on my work, particularly its simple and balanced compositions. I like to achieve this unfussy harmony in my paintings.
My landscapes explore themes around stillness and desolation. They are often empty landscapes featuring a man-made structure that will cause the viewer to wonder about habitation, abandonment or desolation.
My block abstracts explore colour and shape. I start with an image or structure in mind and paint in a free way, often by squeezing the tubes of paint directly on to the canvas. In this style I can be expressive without worry and it satisfies my need of immediacy.
