Melissa Hutton
Concept
Melissa Hutton’s work explores issues of isolation, lost ideals, false realities and socioeconomic issues spurred by the ubiquity of mass production and American consumerism. Her interest in the influence of mass media derives from her professional career as a graphic designer. Hutton’s vision is marked by her commitment to maintain a relationship between the two, culminating in visually polished, strangely soothing work that speaks to contemporary social concerns.
By employing broad planes of color, sharp lines, soothing imagery and strong perspective and encasing them in smooth, glossy surfaces, she allures the viewer into her uncomfortably tanquil scenes. Yet under these polished surfaces the viewer is forced to observe from a distance. This work, with its familiar scenes of farmland and vast lonely spaces, foregrounds a society that has lost sight of its beginnings in a manner that is both thought provoking and compassionate.
Hutton’s process begins with a digital orchestration of both found and personal images and ideas which are translated onto wood panels through the layering of spray paint, silk-screening, hand painting, veneer, color transparencies and resin.
